My Brave New World

In my Brave New World, we have our own Bokanovsky Groups: Chinese,Indian,Malay,Caucasian...the Indian Caste System of Brahmins and Pariahs...we can also have test-tube babies and now the respective authorities are arguing about embryonic stem-cell research.

In my Brave New World,it is a meritocratic system. The geniuses and prodigies would succeed effortlessly whilst the intellectually-challenged would have to work harder or suffer later. We are programmed from young to strive to be successful in almost everything we do,otherwise we wouldn't "have a bright future." We love studying, we enjoy working long hours cos we wanna succeed. We are conditioned to dislike failures. However, some are programmed to pick themselves up from these fallbacks whilst others just wallow in the mire.

In my Brave New World, our hypnopaedic lessons come in the form of naggings and scoldings but unlike, Huxley's Brave New World, they do not work most of the time. They have to understand that hynopaedia wouldn't work cos we are individuals. Even though the naggings may be good, sometimes we have to learn it the hard way.

In my Brave New World, even though infants do not exhibit sexual behaviour amongst themselves, it is ironic to see adults who are behaving in a childish manner, gossiping and backstabbing fellow colleagues or friends. Why can't we learn to put aside our grievances about them and pray for them instead? "The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much..."

In Huxley's Brave New World, they laugh at people from the Savage Reservation (people who don't look as youthful and beautiful as them). Yet, in my Brave New World, isn't that familiar too? Despite us saying that inner beauty is more important than the exterior, I see plenty of false preachers.

In my Brave New World, we may laugh at the Soma (something like cocaine and morphine)that the people take to feel happy when they are stressed but in my Brave New World, the number of people taking drugs are not any lesser.

In my Brave New World, whenever you're famous, you have no peace due to the swarms of papparazzi invading your home. When you do something controversial (regardless of whether it's a postive or negative kind of controversy), there will always be people who're trying to get close to you to know more about it or simply, to gossip about it.

Lastly, in Huxley's Brave New World, items considered as pornography include literature or anything that encourages individuality. But I'm proud to say that in my Brave New World, there IS Shakespeare, there are many forms of poetry and finally, there is a God who is always there to talk to to help us overcome all the depressing scenes of my Brave New World that I have mentioned above.

As the New Year is about to begin, let us face our Brave New World with Him in mind. Without Him, we would be like John the Savage who committed suicide at the end. (Even though it may not be physical suicide, think about the emotional and spiritual aspect...)

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

K-boxing on post-Boxing Days

I've waited for so long to catch this movie....Night at the Museum was AWESOME!!! You really should go and catch it!!! It's hilarious and some things were totally unexpected such as when the Mummy bursts out of his tomb and starts to unpeel the bandages he has on his face and guess what? Instead of a dirty and disfigured corpse of a face, you get a handsome young and REAL Egyptian in the form of Rami Malek!!!

The hottest Mummy on earth

Besides him, there were many other veteran actors in it too like Dick Van Dyke, Mickey Rooney and Bill Cobbs. They really complement each other as the 3 retired night guards in the movie man!!! I found Mickey the funniest, he plays the little man who wants to look like a bigshot and you should observe the expressions he uses when he rebukes Ben Stiller in the movie!!! (eg. "What you doin 'round here, hopscotch"?)

Mickey Rooney, Dick Van Dyke and Bill Cobbs

Attila the Hun was also nice. In fact, I think he's one of the funniest museum exhibits cos he'll be speaking Mongolian (which is probably made up cos it sounds like baby talk!) to Stiller and the latter will try to utter baby talk back!

Attila the Hun and Larry Daly (Ben Stiller)

Oh ya! The stone monument of Easter Island was also comical cos he demands for chewing gum! (eg. "Dum Dum! Where's my gum gum!?")

Night at the Museum is really a feel-good movie which concludes with the museum exhibits cooperating with Stiller to save, ultimately themselves. Go watch it!

Shannon also agreed that the movie was good and she was sharp enough to notice some scenes that could be referenced to that of Brokeback Mountain (eg. When the Roman General and Owen Wilson's cowboy character were engaged in a dialogue and when Wilson replied, "I'm not quitting you."). Anyways, after the movie, headed to Kinokuniya to get some essential school materials and then, met up with the girls for K-boxing.

After a two-month hiatus from school, I finally met up with Samantha, Rhyss and Charlene. Headed straight to Marina Square after meeting Rhyss and Charlene. Sam arrived later due to personal commitments. K-boxing was not as cheap as I thought! For 4 hours and 2 drinks, we had to fork out $17.50 each...singing in the shower's not that bad after all...plus there's natural acoustics! :P

I'm so glad that my time and money spent there was not wasted though. Initially I thought that we wouldn't be that participative and would sing "politely" but it was anything but that! Everyone just hummed and croaked and crooned. Even when the waitress popped in occasionally to check on the drinks, we would still carry out our "dispersed melody!" Rhyss was boogey-ing and jumping up and down like a little kid and Sam was issuing monotonous sounds to the microphone whenever she doesn't know the lyrics well or when the lyrics were stupid. (eg."Baby...ooh...yeah...baby,baby...") hahaha! Sang till 7, my throat was beginning hurt, I had a super low and raspy voice!

Nice time we had! Charlene, thanks for the Chocolate and the purse! Sam, thanks for the Christmas card and present and Rhyss, thanks for simply showing up and making my day =)

Pre-College blues...

Suddenly it dawned upon me that we're gonna be J2s soon! I just can't believe it! It's like when you just entered JC fresh from O levels, you feel that you'll slowly adapt to the JC system but before you know it, you're outta' it! Like what Mr Low said today, when you're in J1, the J2s seemed big and the work they do seemed difficult but, we're gonna be J2s in one week's time and it still hasn't registered in my head yet!

It's weird, the feeling of going back to college after the December holidays. You're not accustomed to the fact that you're going in as a J2, not a J1. Plus the workload next year, it's just overwhelming!!! I haven't even completed this year's holiday homework yet! Choir practices would also be further intensified (as if it isn't currently...) to a startling 5 times a week!!!

God, I pray for wisdom, strength and good time management next year...

Aunty Elsie's Christmas Party and a nagging thought...

Hmm, before I talk about the Christmas message in Church on Christmas Eve, let me just fast-forward and rant about Aunty Elsie's Christmas Party.

For this event, Jia Qi and Jia Hui plus my siblings, Er Yi and mum went too so it was quite a party. Upon reaching Aunty Elsie's Sengkang flat, we were immediately greeted with the wafting smells of catered food outside the apartment. Schneider boy, Aunty Elsie's nephew, was as cute as ever. In fact, he was much more adorable and I kept pinching his cheeks!!! [At least I handled him with care, unlike my violent aunt who deftly snatched him from his walker and planted wet, slobbery kisses on Schneider's forehead, to the point where there were lipstick stains! If Schneider boy could talk, I bet he would be complaining nonstop! :P

Watched "Over The Hedge" and "Click" after dinner. It was such a pity that Aunty Elsie's mum did not cook her famous vegetable curry and Bee Hoon! I would give anything to have that again! [Ok, I'm exaggerating but it's really mouth-watering!]

We also got to taste Italian Chocolate. I think a friend of Aunty Elsie's sent the Chocolates all the way from Italy as a Christmas present. As I was a sweet tooth, I kept taking more Chocolate until I had to exercise some self-restraint!

Aunty Elsie gave us presents when we left. She was really generous cos she gave my brother a Swatch Watch! She gave me this nice, metallic necklace and my sis also got a necklace.

Now for the Christmas message.
Pastor Lim preached about the real meaning of Christmas. He got his inspiration from The Straits Times "Saturday" Section after seeing the headlines: "World with no Peace? World with no Joy?" Following the headlines were the various statisics depicting the number of lives lost to natural disasters, incurable diseases and the no. of people living in poverty or those who were abused, tortured or who worked as forced labourers and sex workers. Pastor Lim portrayed a grim outlook of the world's state by the look of the statistics and through this, showed how many people really needed Jesus this Christmas.

Using anecdotes to better illustrate his point, he describes the time where he went for this year's Home Christmas at a fellow member's house nearby. Upon reaching the place, he noticed a thin, young boy of about 12, crouching in a corner of the corridor near the house he was heading to. Pastor Lim then asked what the boy was doing, squatting there all alone, and he invited him to join them for the party. The young boy remarked that he couldn't as he had to sell finish the ice-cream that he was carting around, otherwise he would have no money to buy school books. Pastor Lim then asked him how many boxes there were to which the reply was 8. (There were about 10 ice-cream cones in 1 box) He then proceeded to question how much the boy would make per night by selling these ice-cream. The boy replied approximately 10 dollars. To the boy's amazement, Pastor Lim told him to join the party and not to worry about the ice-cream cos he would buy them ALL!! (the total cost was roughly $30++!!)

During the party, the group sang Christmas Carols and there was a short sharing. When the time came for the preacher to asked if anyone would like to accept Jesus, the little boy raised his hand and the group prayed for him. Isn't that amazing? 8 boxes of ice-cream to save a soul!

The reason I shared this was because it gave me so much encouragement. It also serves to remind me the purpose of Christmas. In the past few years, Christmas has become more and more commericalised. Shopping malls are known for taking advantage of this festive occasion to attrtact more shoppers for more profits. People get so caught up with buying gifts and planning parties that they seemed to forget the real meaning of Christmas.

I have to admit that this year, Christmas seemed to be more of a hassle than a time to rejoice and reflect. Even though I'm more or less satisfied with the parties I attended and the presents I received, I still felt rather empty inside. In contrast, when I received a Christmas SMS, the joy was incomprehensible. It just shows that sometimes it doesn't take much to make someone's day.

This sermon really came at the right time. As Christians, we should not be disheartened by the reports that the newspaper published cos we know that God would be the one that would give us the inner peace and joy that the world would not provide. After all, God is Wonderful. He is the Prince of Peace, our Counsellor whom we can turn to not only in times of trouble but when we are happy and we give thanks.
According to what Pastor Lim quoted from a famous personality, he said something like this: "History teaches us that Man does not learn from History" Isn't that true? Even though we know about WWI and the number of lives lost, there was still WWII and even now, the Iraq conflict is still taking place. We just don't seem to get it, don't we?
This Christmas, instead of just celebrating it like any other Christmas, wouldn't it be nice if we can really do something that will create a significant impact in someone's history of pleasant memories...

Deep-fried me?

Finally! A major revamp for my blog without much help!! Only sought the wise counsel of Joan, the "veteran blogskin consultant" for her opinions on the blogskin but this one was not approved/disapproved by her. I chose this myself! =)

Now to talk about the various Christmas events I've been involved in...

Er Yi's Christmas Party

Actually it was also considered my Christmas Party cos I initiated it,planned the menu with her and helped her throughout. That's why I get to invite my friends: Joan, Ai Ping, Jean, Shannon and Jacinth. Cuiwen and Sze Yee couldn't come due to church and school commitments respectively.

We took about one week to plan and buy the ingredients in the menu and 2 days to prepare the food cos we're expecting around 30-35 people. [The most number of people invited to our Christmas Party so far!] From wrapping the presents and setting up the Christmas tree to cooking the spaghetti sauce and deep-frying the finger food on the day itself, man! It was certainly not as easy as I thought it would be!
I think the toughest part was the preparation for the food and that includes washing the plates and cutlery [my aunt dislikes the idea of using paper utensils as she says that they not only waste resources but they are not as "elegant" compared to using porcelain plates!] Besides my mum, second aunt, my sis and me who helped out, Ai Ping also chipped in a little! =)

This year was extremely special cos almost everyone we invited came: my Maternal grandparents, Third Aunt [together with Mocha, her Cocker Spaniel after that!], First Uncle and his family [we see them only twice a year-during Chinese New Year, but they came for this!] Third Uncle and his family except the wife, Aunty Emmeline and her family, Aunty Soh Hwa and her family [together with the Schnauzer, Rabble after that! Everyone gave so much attention to it!], My friends,Aunty Naoko and her family plus my family except my Dad.

It was quite nice to see everyone gathering and catching up with each other...even the kids had fun! Kengo was THE boy that day...Ai Ping and the rest were busy playing with him, together with his siblings Yuki and Tatsuya. At one point in time, they were engaged in some "UNO War" in which they shove UNO cards under the door to see who could get the most cards to the other side or something like that!. [Tatsuya and my sister versus the rest!]

Evidence of the War Codes that both parties were engaged in!

Not long after that, the Japanese kids got tired and they decided to rummage through the presents under the tree to spot presents with their names.

Ai Ping and the kids "shipping" the presents for easier detection :P

As for the food, there was more than enough to satisfy their stomachs. This year we decided to go East and West so for the main course, there was Bee Hoon, Fried Rice and Spaghetti. Side dishes include the superb salad which my second aunt bought from Tekka Market, Curry Chicken, Roast Beef, Ham and Pineapple and the various finger foods, Dumplings, Fried Chicken and Vegetable Platter. For Dessert there were 4 cakes: 2 logcakes [1 baked by Jia Qi's mum and the other ordered online], 1 Chocolate Cake by Aunty Naoko's family and the other a birthday cake for Jean's birthday.Besides the cakes, there was Grass Jelly and 3 tubs of ice-cream (which was untouched as there was too much to finish!) plus pancakes for the older generation. And for the drinks, there was Chinese tea, coffee,Soyabean Milk,Apple Cider Vinegar soaked with Pandan leaves [which was the least popular drink!] and Soft drinks.

Aunty Naoko's pretty Chocolate cake

As my Second Aunt's place was quite small, my friends were holed up in her study room. It was exclusive but cosy and thus, we surprised Jean with the cake!

I guess the most awkward part would be when Ai Ping was opening her present. I knew she would like what I gave but I didn't expect her to be THAT touched! hahaha!

This year, I received many bags. Of course, there was also the occasional box of Chocolates which everyone would be bound to receive every Christmas but the most expensive gift I got this year was...a digital camera from my third aunt! Apparently she overheard me discussing with my mum whether to get a digicam or not cos it was rather troublesome borrowing from people.

After everyone left, we brought the house to order and by the time we left, it was a few minutes past midnight. [and my energy level was at an all-time low!] But Thank God it was a success!

Home Christmas Celebration @ G12 and Choir Farewell Party

Despite us having 2 months of holidays, there's just so many things to do and so little time. Well, maybe it's due to me not managing my time well but I bet even if I do, it's still not enough!

Hmm,at least 2 events have come and gone (Thank God!). It's like another burden off my shoulders, not that I really participate actively in them though...

Home Christmas Celebration @ G12

This year, we had quite a good turnout, mostly due to Bernice who brought SIX friends!!! Everything went on as per normal, except that I noticed a certain restlessness amongst our new friends when Yireng was sharing the Word. (guess they weren't used to it) That aside, I think everything went quite well..The highlight would be the games. For every game, there would surely be a forfeit so Bernice was the unlucky one! As she couldn't even stand the sight of Yireng's fake lizards, we came up with the punishment of putting one fake lizard on her leg for 20 seconds. It was like torture for her man!!! All of us captured that significant moment.

After games was gift exchange, I got a photo frame. The food was really good. Bernice's granny cooked curry (shiok!!)with bread, there was Shepherd's Pie, Kid's Pie (hmm,a pie with no chilli, just simple stuff), Chocolate Cake,Ham and pineapple,Chicken,Fruit Salad,Chips...etc...

Choir Farewell Party

Guess everyone wanted to get this over and done with...It really caused a lot of frustration, blood, sweat and tears. (literally!)
Arrived late but the party was not in full swing yet. (actually, it never was...) Decor was good, love the disco ball! [our theme was Retro by the way...] At first, everyone just stuck with their own cliques, mingling around occasionally. For the food, it was only Bee Hoon, Fishballs, Cucumbers and Old Chang Kee initially but after that they ordered Canadian Pizza. Someone suggested watching an R21 movie so off we went to the Function Room's Theatre. The movie was hilarious although there were some parts which we shouldn't have watched. The funniest scene was with this guy called "Freakshow" (or something like that) and his hot babe of a wife. Just to explain a bit, Freakshow isn't exactly a good-looker. In fact, he looks worse than the average person with a patches of hair on his head and boils pulsating on his neck and face with the occasional pus oozing out from them, get the picture now? Anyway, his wife was describing how they met and got married. Guess what?

Said the wife, "We met during Choir Practice."

And Mimi and I just erupted into fits of laughter right there and then cos THE GRAND FINALS WAS JUST TAKING PLACE IN FRONT OF US!!!! [inside joke..for those who don't get it...]

Surprised Eunice with a birthday cake [OoOooOo,more Grand Finals!!!] and after that, the rest continued watching the movie while some stayed back to help clean up and stuff.

Oh ya! I helped Zhiyi take some nice shots of herself to remember the night and she said I was pro. WOOHOO~ check this out:

After Henry gave out the mementoes to the seniors, Zhiyi and I went home together with the rest.

All in all, attendance was not that bad, at least for the seniors. Many came: Juliana, Sherlyn Chua,Lynette,Adeline,Ding Neng,Kee Siang,Chin Soon,Daryl,Chee Kian,Kenny,Christopher...I think that's about it....

SCO Concert reflections

Hey! I'm back after a busy week with Choir. We were in the midst of SCO Concert preparations and I'm so glad it has finally ended. Learnt many things in the process and of course, had loads of fun with the Choir peeps...who knew that monks were so all-rounded? In my case, they were drumming [traditional drums!], singing,etc...at least my stereotype of monks chanting and cooping themselves in temples is gone [just to be frank for the record!]. Oh ya! Also got to hear the overtone produced by the Tibetan monks who came all the way from India. Scary but amazing!
Anyways, Shannon and I got interviewed by a Buddhist magazine. The reporters asked us questions such as "What new insights have you gained from performing in this concert?" and "How is this concert different from the rest?" After that I asked them which magazine they were from and I think they misunderstood me cos they were like "Oh! I can send the magazine with your interview to you! May I have your email address?" when actually all I wanted to know was which magazine they came from! hahaha!
Standing for hours in heels can kill! That's why I have to mention the ultimate, OLIVIA KAM! Her heels were super thin and in the process of wearing them I almost lost my balance already! I don't know how on earth she could even walk in them! hahaha!

Olivia and me at SCO Concert
I think, no I AM, putting on weight man! There's definitely no doubt about that! After all the late night after-SCO-suppers and what-not, who wouldn't?

Next on the agenda is Christmas! There's just so many things to do: helping out with my aunty's Christmas party, attending home Christmas @ G12, Christmas service itself, supporting Ai Ping in her solo performance in church, going for Aunty Elsie's Christmas Party...Choir Farewell Party [if they finalise the thing] and, if the girls are meeting up, gathering with Charlene,Rhyss and Samantha.
Oh! and if I still have the energy, Chingay 2007...I hope that it wouldn't clash with Choir but I'm pretty sure it would so, fat hope!

And Homework's not touched yet. Not all, that is.

Well, shall end this post with a poem I wrote when inspiration hit at the oddest moment. Good night!

The Love Project

Lying in bed one still night
Sounds of a computer whirring in the background,
It swept her over in a wave of emotion.

Friends they were in the beginning,
Friends they seemed to others.
Just Friends-a status safe enough for both to acknowledge.

Surrounded with knowledge of the past and present,
they worked on the task at hand-
A Project of Love (or so it seemed)

A furtive glance,
A shy grin.
The two walked the streets of the new regime as one.

Flowers bloomed,
they walked the talk
The sun warmed their backs.
Megawatt smiles coupled with the occasional healthy blush
on her cheeks,
the heat is on.

The heat WAS on.
Peals of laughter from the past flooded her mind now
Like echoes reverberating in a tunnel.

The Balm of Gilead which soothed her before
Reeked of a new aroma.

Cunning and efficient,
the takeover began.
Gushes of expired love did litlle but to drown her instead.

He sees her drowning yet takes no heed
He is swimming in the same current,
Megawatt smiles directed to another ONE now.

Gasping for breath,
Its electricity jolted her awake.
Felt like a thousand daggers rushing at her heart.

She surfaces from her tears just in time
Feeling empty and trapped,
A weary Handmaid in a new government.

Someone kills the power of the computer.
She closes her eyes.

Casting Crowns and Ai Ping's Sleepover

One of the reasons why this entry is gonna be short is due to me sleeping at almost 4.30am last night but before I get started on that, we'll talk about what happened before this.

Casting Crowns Concert
Argh! I can't believe I missed out on Thursday night's concert cos according to most of the Evangelites present on that day, it was better than the one on the last night because:

(1) they sang more songs, around 12 in total cos on the last night they had to rush to catch their flight.
(2) Andy aka "The Wrestler" the drummer gave a drum solo impromptu! Even though I got a glimpse of video footage of that moment, I bet it'll be even better seeing it LIVE!!!

But, it was still good. (Hmm...."good" is definitely an understatement to describe how, erm, good they were!) Ai Ping went with me too and thankfully, we got seats in the the main hall otherwise we had to go up to THE PROVIDENCE to view via Video link, which my 3rd aunt and her friend, Aunty Kwee Huay, did cos they were late.
Pastor Mark Hall is really an annointed speaker man! He can really connect to anyone through his mini sermons and his songs and his voice is amazing! The way he sings is as though it requires no effort at all!

Really admire them a lot. It's like they use the talents which God has blessed them with to reach out to millions and I'm sure they love what they're doing too!

Casting Crowns performing to a crowd of more than 4000 during the two nights

Andy the uber cool drummer

Ah!! I guess this must be Melanie the violinist cum backup singer

Pastor Mark Hall
After the concert, San Yi together with her friend Aunty Kwee Huay and I went to Fullerton's Town Cafe to have a late dinner. The food was good man! I went French that day. Even the appetiser could be the main course!

Appetiser: Multi-grain bread served with butter and Chilli (weird but its good, surprisingly!)

Next we had Caesar Salad and Soft shell Crab as the entree. Main Course was Grilled Rib Eye Wagyu Beef or something like that...the beef just melts in your mouth man!

The aunties had red wine throughout (which was on the house!) and after that, the staff celebrated Aunty Kwee Huay's birthday with a complimentary cake (Tiramisu I think!)

The bill came and it was time to face reality. About $100++!! [Tonight, my shit will be of gourmet quality man! =P]

Ai Ping's Sleepover

Surprised Anastasia first thing when she reached. Jacinth and I were trying very hard to stick the candle in its holder! Earlier on, Ai Ping and Jacinth prepared spaghetti for Ana's dinner. Chatted and laughed a lot due to plenty of exaggeration and mimicking...heh heh! Talked for a long time after that in Ai Ping's room and found out many things. Played Twister after that. (At first I was thinking of not bringing it so that I can go to Ai Ping's house free and easy but changed my mind after that) I didn't regret bringing it though. We were all positioned in such a FARTABLE state! It was simply hilarious! Sneaked out of the house for midnight snack at 7-11 and watched "Rent" after that. Found out that we are such lousy movie marathoners! (the exception being Ana who downed a can of coffee to keep her awake!) Afer the first disc we were all tired and sleepy so we slept while Ana used the computer. Woke up at 8am. Reached home at 9am and left the house at 9.45am for church. Now you know the reason of me being tired.hahaha!

Racial Harmony Amazing Race 2006

Due to preparations for the Malacca trip, i did not have time to blog about what happened on 3rd December, the Sunday before the Malacca trip. I have to blog about that day cos it was quite an experience. Charlie Brown, Kok Kok, Eugene, Mimi and I took part in the Racial Harmony Amazing Race 2006 on that day. We met at Bedok Interchange before going to East Coast:Marine Cove, the venue for the flag off. Upon reaching and registering, we changed into our Amazing Race T-shirts which were quite funny cos in front, on the top left side of the shirt were the words "I'm in a Race!" and that got Charlie Brown and Mimi to think of absurd poses and expressions as usual. We got a bag each that contains a cap, raisin bread, mineral water, a poncho and a map (which got Charlie Brown pissed cos he brought a poncho, a bus directory and a map!) Our group's name was "DE SAYs", each letter representing our name.

As we had some spare time, the 5 of us sat down at McDonald's and had "a strategy talk" according to Charlie Brown. We spent the time finding the places where we would most probably go to and their respective bus routes. We saw Ivan there as well. He was part of the organising committee and he told us that he would be located at "some Bedok area." We were flagged off at around 11am and our first stop was at the Bedok Library. Along the way, Eugene tripped and fell due to the wet ground as it was drizzling a little when we started. His knee was badly bruised though but he said he was fine. The organiser there told us to cooperate with another team (the "All Guys Group") to find a Chinese Vocabulary Book on the first level. After what seemed like eternity, Kok Kok found it and we were then told to give them names of Chinese, Malay and Indian dishes.

Next stop was the Sri Siva Durga Temple (or something like that) in Potong Pasir. We took quite a long time to find it. We were almost certain that the "All Guys Group" (one of the groups in our category that were all males) that were taking the same route as us would reach there before us cos we alighted from bus 26 halfway and took bus 13 so that we would have a shorter route to run but it was a risk as we had to take into consideration the waiting time for bus 13. On bus 13, we encountered a traffic jam, partly due to the Marathon which happened on the same day. We were almost sure that the "All Guys Group" would have already reached there in no time. Upon reaching, we had to remove our socks and shoes before entering. By that time, there were many devotees worshipping in the temple already but our station was at a remote part of the temple. We were told to cut a lime into half, dig out the filling and fill it with Ghee, stick a wick into the Ghee and light it. When we finally completed that, we saw the "All Guys Group" rushing into the temple. (we were ahead of them! woohoo~) Sadly, the organiser did not convey his instructions well. We had to actually make 10 lime candles and not one! He wasted our time! We could have actually divided the work instead of concentrating our energies on one lime candle! However, the temple caretakers gave us a lot of attention and the "All Guys Group" were on their own.

Next was the Bethel Presbyterian Church located near Sommervale Road (where Evangel Family Church initially was in the early days!) The organiser at the temple told us they had a hard time finding the place but we found it in no time. However, they were right in saying that it was hard to navigate your way there cos there were many slopes and turnings. Charlie Brown was saying that we were not as "Geographically Challenged" as them cos by that time, he was quite annoyed with the organisers for not doing their job well. At the church, we had to memorise a plague found outside the main hall, after which they would ask us questions regarding what is written on the plague. After that was charades. Mimi delivered us out of it in no time. Kok Kok was telling us that he could see the words written on the card which Mimi referred to and that was how he guessed the words "Halal" and "Sikh!" There was no sign of the "All Guys Group" even after we left the place so it was a good sign. [there are actually 10 teams competing in our category, which was the Tertiary category. There were 2 different routes, one for 5 teams and the other for the remaining 5 teams. We were the first few in our route but the "All Guys Group" were our direct competitiors. Therefore, I kept mentioning them as a barometer of our performance]

The fourth stop was at Bedok Reservoir. This was the deciding factor of the position we get later on cos this was our killer stop! Along the way, I called Cuiwen for help cos I thought she would be sure of how to go there but she did not answer my call immediately and when she finally called back, we were on to another stop already. We took the wrong bus, made some mistakes along the way which led to us waiting for half an hour for bus 87 (our killer bus!) before transferring again to bus 59. The organisers there told us we were third in our category already. (we thought we were first or second) Back there, we had to answer questions again. If we answered correctly, we were entitled to using a spoon to ferry water to a cup some distance away. If we were wrong, we had to use a straw. (another mistake that the organising committee did not look into cos using a straw would be much faster than a spoon) After realising that, we answered our questions wrongly. It was really funny cos they were asking "What do Indians use to decorate their houses with on Deepavali?" or something like that and Kok Kok was like shouting "White Cloth! White Cloth! Wrong right?" before grabbing a straw, filling water in his mouth and racing to spit it all in the cup.

The Sri Gurdwara Temple (wrong spelling again I think!) near Katong Post Office was our next stop. It was a Sikh temple (if I'm not wrong) Here, the organisers screwed up again. Our group and another group from the "Open" Category reached there at around the same time. Our group had already arrived there together as a group and the other group still had some members who were on their way there. However, the oranisers decided to attend to the other group first, causing us to waste even more time! Anyways, we were told to do "Kolam" (those paintings in which coloured sand were used. I think I spelt it wrongly!) to do a picture which represents Racial Harmony. The group decided to use the different types of sand to make handprints and connect them together in a circle.

After that, we were told to enter the temple and find the name of a sage whose limbs were chopped off. For the next stop, the clue required us to solve a maze, in which we had to trace our way to the right alphabet to form the word to our final stop-the Khadijah mosque.

By the time we arrived there, many groups were on the same bus as us, heading to the same destination. However, they were from different categories so it was not so bad. At the mosque, we were required to play capteh-as long as each member in the team passes the capteh to the other without it dropping on the floor, we complete the challenge. We decided to use our hands instead!

We raced back to East Coast:Marine Cove but along the way, there were disagreements among the group. Kok Kok decided to change buses along the way as he thought it would lead us to East Coast faster but the buses were going in the wrong direction. As he was so enthusiastic and panicky, he caused me to panic and when we realised that we boarded the wrong bus, I had already tapped my card so the whole group had to take the bus and alight one stop later. After that, the same thing happened and Mimi and Charlie Brown were already quite irritated. We decided to stick to taking our original bus, bus 196, instead. We reached the registration booth and the person in charge gave us a tag with the letters "T3" imprinted on them. I asked if that means we were the 3rd among the 10 groups that reached but he said nothing. [silence meant consent!] Not long after, someone from the team that reached earlier told us that we may be first in our category cos they had additional time added due to them not being able to complete some stops. Moreover, the "All Guys Group" reached a few minutes after us which means that we were the champions!! We were shrieking and yelling in delight cos we thought that we would not even win anything at all but after that we decided not to be complacent and see what happens first. Otherwise we would be rejoicing too early.

Before the results were announced, they had performances going on. There were fire eaters, "bubble boys" [a term I coined for the contortionists that were squeezing themselves in bubble-looking things]. After that, the emcee was going around and asking the particpants how they found the race and what they learnt. When he asked Mimi, she said "I found out that bus 87 was the best bus on earth" or something like that.hahaha!!

Mrs. Jessica Tan was the guest-of-honour and she went onstage to give out the prizes. We got 2nd in our category [which was not too bad already] and surprisingly, the "All Guys Group" got first! According to what we discussed, it must be due to some time deduction on their part cos we reached earlier than them but it was just a guess. Anyway, second was better than nothing and we got a trophy (which we found out had double-sided tape to aid in its construction) and a $600 sports voucher which means $120 for each person! woohoo~

We were photographed with the winners from the other categories along with Mrs. Jessica and I think we would be appearing in the Northeast CDC Magazine in no time! hahahaha! Charlie Brown said he would look out for that.

It was off to McDonald's for dinner after that. Mimi and I were laughing at what Kok Kok said and he confused me with playing pool. (inside joke!) Stayed there till 7 plus until Mimi's family gave us a lift in their van to Bedok Station where Kok Kok and I took bus 28 back.

All in all, I think we did better than expected. Even Kok Kok tried his best. He was very motivated, he told us. He ran very fast and he was carrying our bag too! I'll post the photos soon when Charlie Brown sends them to us...
